LECTURE:

Drawing Cartoons in Southwest Florida

Explore our southwest Florida environment in a humorous and a somewhat irreverent perspective with local award winning cartoonist Doug MacGregor.  Our local landscape we call paradise is filled with colorful character and plenty of cartoon fodder thanks to fellow natives, tourists, seasonal visitors and snowbirds. Let’s all look in the mirror and laugh.

BOOKS:

I will bring copies of my three current books in print:

•The Best of Sunny-Side Up
•Doug MacGregor’s Cartoons:  A 25-Year Retrospective

Lecture Title – Old Florida – Wilder than the West

Most people associate the US west of the Mississippi with the frontier, outlaws, vigilantes, and rough and tumble characters, but Florida’s frontier and reconstruction days rivals Tombstone at its zenith.  This lecture is about some interesting facts regarding Florida before 1960 and how the author incorporates them into some of his works.

Sandy Seeley Walling --
Author/Illustrator. Born Sandra Virginia Seeley, January 22, 1948, Red Bank, New Jersey.

Sandy Seeley Walling's first children's book, A Day at the Beach. A seaside counting book from 1 to 10. is a book born of the frustrations she experienced as a child of dyslexia. "Dyslexia was an unknown problem when I was growing up and I remember many painful evenings trying to learn my spelling words; the letters made no sense to me." Struggling to keep up with the other children, she finally taught herself to read. Ms. Walling emphasizes that she is not a reading specialist, but is however a participant in the painful process of learning to read with a disability. A Day at the Beach. helps children learn from an early age that there is a correlation between the numbers, words and objects in her book.

Her second book, ABC’s at the Zoo! help’s children understand the difficult concept of upper case and lower case letters by using adult and baby animals as examples of how two objects can be similar, but not look exactly alike. She uses unusual animals in this book and includes a glossary in the back that gives interesting facts about each one.

Ms. Walling is available for book signings, "Meet the Author" events and lectures covering the following topics:

~ What it’s like to grow up in a world of mixed-up letters and numbers
~ How to Write – Illustrate & Publish your own book
~ Printing, or being a woman in a man’s profession
